A crochet bag sounds like an intermediate project. This one is not, because of a single trick. That single trick is what turns how to crochet a mini bag into a beginner project.
- Skill level: Beginner
- Time: About 2 hours
- Yarn: Worsted (4) cotton (about 70 m)
- Hook: 3.5mm or 4.0mm
- Finished size: About 10 cm across, 9 cm tall
- Terms: US crochet terms
You make a flat circle. Then you stop increasing and keep crocheting. That is it — the fabric has nowhere to go but upward, and the circle becomes a cylinder with a base. No seams, no panels, no assembly, no shaping beyond the base you already know how to make.
Understanding that one idea is worth more than the pattern itself. It is how every crochet basket, bucket bag, hat crown and plant pot cover is built. Stop increasing, go up.
About two hours. Finished bag roughly 10 cm across and 9 cm tall — a phone, keys and a card, or a very well received gift pouch.

What you need
Worsted weight (4) cotton. Cotton is the right choice for anything that holds a shape — it has no stretch, so the bag will not sag and stretch out of shape the way an acrylic one will once there is something in it.
A 3.5mm or 4.0mm hook. Smaller than the label suggests, for a dense fabric that stands up.
A stitch marker, a tapestry needle, and scissors.
Around 70 metres, so one and a half small balls.

Everything you need for this project
Terms
US crochet terms.
- MR = magic ring
- sc = single crochet (UK double crochet)
- inc = 2 sc into the same stitch
- sl st = slip stitch
- BLO = back loop only
- ( ) x6 = repeat the bracket six times
How the shape works
Two rules do all the work.
For a flat circle: every round adds the same number of stitches as round 1. Six here, so 6, 12, 18, 24, 30.
For straight sides: stop adding. Work the same number of stitches every round and the fabric rises instead of spreading.
The transition between the two is where the base meets the sides, and it is worth doing deliberately. Working one round in back loops only at that point creates a crease, so the base turns a clean right angle instead of curving gently upward. Without it, you get a bowl. With it, you get a bag.
How to crochet a mini bag, round by round
Base
- R1: 6 sc in MR — (6)
- R2: inc in each st — (12)
- R3: (sc, inc) x6 — (18)
- R4: (2 sc, inc) x6 — (24)
- R5: (3 sc, inc) x6 — (30)
The base should lie completely flat. Check it now — if it ruffles or cups, fix it here rather than discovering it once the sides are up.
The corner
- R6: sc BLO in each st around — (30)
You will feel the fabric want to fold along this round. That is correct.
Sides
- R7–R16: sc in each st around, ten rounds — (30)
Add or remove rounds for a taller or shorter bag. Each round adds roughly 0.7 cm.
Top edge
- R17: sl st in each st around.
Slip stitches give a neat firm edge that will not stretch. Fasten off and weave in the end.
Strap
Rejoin your yarn at the top edge of the bag.
Ch 60, then attach to the opposite side of the bag with a sl st — count 15 stitches around from where you joined to find the midpoint.
Now work back along the chain: sl st into each chain all the way back to where you started, then sl st into the bag and fasten off.
That doubling matters. A single chain strap stretches under weight and looks thin. Slip stitching back along it gives a firm, flat cord that holds its length.
For a longer crossbody strap: ch 120 instead of 60.
For a wrist strap: ch 25.
Troubleshooting
The base will not lie flat. Count round 5 — it must be exactly 30. Ruffling means too many increases, cupping means too few.
The sides flare outward. You are still increasing somewhere. Once you reach round 7, every round is exactly 30 stitches with no exceptions.
The sides pull inward. Tension tightened up when you started the straight rounds. It happens when the work suddenly feels different in your hands. Relax and keep going — it usually evens out, and the bag will still be usable.
The base curves up instead of turning a corner. You skipped the back loop only round, or worked it into both loops.
The bag is floppy and will not stand. Hook too large, or acrylic yarn. Cotton and a smaller hook.
The strap stretches. You did not slip stitch back along the chain. A single chain will always stretch.
Stitches are visibly slanting. Normal in spiral crochet. The slight diagonal is inherent to the technique.
Variations
Lined. Cut a circle and a rectangle of fabric, sew them into a simple tube, and hand-stitch it inside the top edge. Makes it much more usable for small items and looks finished.
With a flap. After round 16, work 12 sc, then turn and work back and forth on those 12 stitches for six rows. Round the corners by decreasing at each end of the last two rows. Add a button.
Drawstring. Instead of a strap, work round 17 as ch 2, skip 1 st, sc in next st around, then thread a chain through the holes.
Colour blocked. Base in one colour, sides in another. Change at round 6.
Bigger. Add round 6 to the base — (4 sc, inc) x6 for 36 — then work the sides on 36. Chunky yarn with a 5.0mm hook roughly doubles everything with no changes.
Textured sides. Work the side rounds in back loops only throughout for horizontal ridges all the way up.
Why this makes a good gift
A small cotton bag is one of those handmade objects that gets used rather than admired and put away. Filled with something small — a bar of soap, a few chocolates — it is also the wrapping and the present at once.
What is next
You now know the whole trick: circle base, stop increasing, go up. A mini basket is the same construction with shorter, stiffer sides and no strap. A beanie is the same construction inverted.
Frequently asked questions
How do you crochet a bag without seams? Work a flat circle base, then stop increasing and continue working rounds. The fabric rises into sides automatically, so there is nothing to sew.
What yarn is best for a crochet bag? Cotton, worsted weight. It has no stretch, so the bag holds its shape under weight. Acrylic sags once there is anything in it.
Why is my crochet bag base not flat? Your increase count is off. For single crochet, each round of a flat circle adds 6 stitches: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30.
How do I make the base turn a sharp corner? Work one round in back loops only at the point where the base ends and the sides begin. It creates a crease and the fabric folds cleanly.
How do I stop my crochet bag strap from stretching? Chain the length you need, then slip stitch back along every chain. The doubled cord holds its length; a single chain will not.
How much yarn does a mini crochet bag use? About 70 metres of worsted weight cotton.
Can beginners crochet a bag? Yes. This one only uses single crochet and a flat circle base — there is no shaping and no assembly.

How do you crochet a mini bag?
Work a flat oval or circular base, turn the sides up with a back loop only round, then work plain rounds to build the body. Finish with a few solid rounds at the top and add a chain strap worked back along itself.
What yarn is best for a small crochet bag?
Cotton. It holds structure, does not stretch permanently under weight, and washes. Acrylic bags sag out of shape after being carried a few times and never recover.
How do I stop my crochet bag stretching?
Use cotton, work a dense fabric with a smaller hook than the label suggests, and add two or three solid rounds at the top opening. For the strap, crochet over a length of cord so it cannot elongate.
Should I line a crochet bag?
For a mini bag, only if the stitch pattern is open. A dense single crochet bag needs no lining. If you used mesh or granny stitch, a simple fabric lining stops small items falling through.
How long does a mini crochet bag take?
About two to three hours including the strap. It uses roughly 100 yards of cotton, so one ball is usually enough for the whole bag.
